Comics Coming in April – Randy’s Picks
Here are the new books that should be hitting sometime starting in April 2014 (although some of them may be later than that). If you’d like to preorder any of these as a special order or add them to your subscription, drop us a line at roguesgallerytx@gmail.com!
Randy’s Top 10:
Star Wars Rebel Heist #1 (of 4) – $3.99 Matt Kindt & Marco Castiello
A young Rebel meets one of the Alliance’s best for his first mission. But the young man’s hero worship is crushed by the reality of Han Solo. A botched escape, a ship that doesn’t work—could it be that Solo is just a lucky bumbler whose luck has run out? From the writer of Mind Mgmt, Suicide Squad and lots more!
Frank Miller’s Big Damn Sin City HC – $100.00
The biggest, baddest Sin City ever is here, just in time for fall’s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For! This imposing volume, suitable for home defense, contains all seven of Frank Miller’s landmark Sin City yarns! In these tales of Marv, Dwight, Gail, Miho, Hartigan, Nancy, and the Yellow Bastard, no corner of Basin City is left unturned, and no bloody deed is left undone. Written with unmatched intensity and drawn in the starkest black-and-white imaginable, with blood-red bits of color, among others, the Sin City books make up the greatest crime saga in comics history, and Big Damn Sin City is the best way to rediscover the whole darn shootin’ match! (Note: We may not order this one for the shelf, since it’s so damn expensive… so if you want one, best to let us know by preordering!)
Parker The Hunter by Richard Stark – $24.99
In 1962, Donald E. Westlake, writing under the pseudonym Richard Stark, created what would become one of the most important and enduring crime fiction series’ ever produced—PARKER. Westlake wrote more than 20 Parker novels, many are considered classics of the genre, and a number of which have transitioned to the big screen. Most notable of these is Point Blank, directed by John Boorman and starring Lee Marvin, released in 1967. Westlake received many accolades during his distinguished career, including being named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writer’s of America, that prestigious organization’s highest honor. Darwyn Cooke has adapted four Parker books as graphic novels so far, including the recently released Slayground. The first three, The Hunter, The Outfit, and The Score have all won Eisner and Harvey Awards. He will be providing all-new color illustrations for The Hunter, the first in a series of hardcover prose novels released in chronological order and featuring Cooke’s art. The Hunter, the first book in the Parker series, is the story of a man who hits New York head-on like a shotgun blast to the chest. Betrayed by the woman he loves and double-crossed by his partner in crime, Parker makes his way cross-country with only one thought burning in his mind—to coldly exact his revenge and reclaim what was taken from him!
Velvet Vol 1 TP – $9.99 Ed Brubaker & Steve Epting
From the bestselling creators of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” comes this smash-hit spy thriller with a unique new twist! When the world’s greatest secret agent is killed, all evidence points to Velvet Templeton, the personal secretary to the Director of the Agency. But Velvet’s got a dark secret buried in her past…because she’s also the most dangerous woman alive.
Cleopatra in Space Book 1 – $12.99 Mike Maihack
A funny, action-packed graphic novel featuring a young Cleopatra — yes, THAT Cleopatra — who’s transported to the future and learns it’s up to her to save the galaxy! When a young Cleopatra (yes, THAT Cleopatra) finds a mysterious tablet that zaps her to the far, REALLY far future, she learns of an ancient prophecy that says she is destined to save the galaxy from the tyrannical rule of the evil Xaius Octavian. She enrolls in Yasiro Academy, a high-tech school with classes like algebra, biology, and alien languages (which Cleo could do without), and combat training (which is more Cleo’s style). With help from her teacher Khensu, Cleo learns what it takes to be a great leader, all while trying to figure out how she’s going to get her homework done, make friends, and avoid detention!
Afterlife with Archie Vol 1 TP – $17.99 Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa & Francesco Francavilla
When Jughead’s beloved pet Hot Dog is killed in a hit and run, Jughead turns to the only person he knows who can help bring back his furry best friend—Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Using dark, forbidden magic, Sabrina is successful and Hot Dog returns to the land of the living. But he’s not the same… and soon, the darkness he brings back with him from beyond the grave begins to spread, forcing Archie, Betty, Veronica and the gang to try to escape from Riverdale!
Escapo HC – $24.99 Paul Pope
From the mind of three-time Eisner Award-winner Paul Pope comes Escapo! Like a feverish mash-up of Fellini films, Heavy Metal magazine, and classic Jack Kirby comics, Escapo tells the tale of a circus escape artist extraordinaire, who can escape from any situation – even from Death himself! However, there is one force even more powerful than the Reaper which Escapo must face. A meditation on life, love, and mortality, Escapo is not to be missed! Originally published in 1999 and long out of print, the new Z2 edition of Escapo is fully colored and redesigned in the French BD format, featuring 50+ pages of bonus content. Included here is the rare two-page alternate ending, only seen in the French edition, as well as a new ten-page story and added pin-ups and sketchbook content by Paul Pope.
Kids Are Weird – $14.95 Jeffrey Brown
As he’s shown in his previous hugely popular books, Jeffrey Brown has a real gift for finding humor in quirky yet universal truths. Now the bestselling author of Darth Vader and Son and Vader’s Little Princess brings his witty comic observations to terrestrial parenting in this perceptive book celebrating the more surreal moments of raising a child. In charming colorful panels, Brown wryly illustrates his fiveyear- old son’s take on the world around him, from watching TV (“Elton John looks pretty in that shirt”) to playing with toys (“This truck can survive on very little water”) to odd requests (“Don’t feel happy at me”), capturing the sweetly weird times that mothers and fathers everywhere experience with their own curious, pure-minded kids.
Ordinary #1 (of 3) – $3.99 Rob Williams & D’Israeli
What if everyone woke up with superpowers – and it was the worst thing in the world? When a strange plague gives every human being on the planet special powers, it’s seen as the next step in human evolution. But hope quickly turns to terror, as every war, terrorist attack, every crime, every simple street argument escalates a truly horrific point. The world is tearing itself apart – every trouble spot becomes a monstrous war zone and nuclear Armageddon looms. The plague must be cured if humankind is to survive. The key lies in the blood of the only human being who didn’t get powers when the plague hit: A downtrodden, recently divorced New York plumber named Michael Fisher. The most ordinary man alive has suddenly become the most extraordinary person on Planet Earth. Giant baseball players, grannies aging in reverse, a talking Grizzly bear. That’s nothing out of the Ordinary!
Hulk #1 Mark Waid & Mark Bagley
Following the shocking events of last month’s INDESTRUCTIBLE HULK finale, Bruce Banner lies at death’s door! If he survives, it WON’T be as the Bruce Banner we’ve known! How will the Hulk wreak vengeance on Banner’s assailant? How CAN he?

Magic the Gathering Born of the Gods Pre-Release in February!
FIRST ROUND BEGINS AT NOON – SECOND ROUND BEGINS AT 3:30 – PRE-REGISTRATION STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
Rogues Gallery will be holding two pre-release events for Magic: The Gathering’s newest set, Born of the Gods, on Sunday, February 2nd! We recommend that you call or email ahead to pre-register, because we have limited space and tend to fill up well before the day of the event itself. We have room for 16 players in the first event, beginning at noon, and 16 players in the second event, beginning at 3:30 PM. If space allows, we are happy to allow players to play in both pre-release tournaments… players will have to buy-in to both tournaments, you cannot carry over cards or decks from the first pre-release into the second. In addition, of late we’ve had folks sign up and not show up, so if you don’t get in on your preferred time, you are welcome to sign up as an alternate or to come in on the day and try to get available spaces.
Registration will begin at noon on February 2nd. We’ll begin the first event at 12:30 with 30 minutes to construct your decks, and the pre-release will run 3 rounds from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM (at the latest). Please note that if you are pre-registered, you must arrive by 12:15 to claim your spot or it will be opened up for walk-ins.
The second tournament will begin registration at 3:30, and the tournament will start as close to 4 PM as we can manage, with 30 minutes to construct your decks. Please note for those pre-registered, you must arrive by 3:45 to claim your spot or it will be opened up for walk-ins.
We will allow walk-ins for both tournaments if the space is not filled, but we encourage pre-registration, as we generally fill up fairly quickly. In addition, because there are two events, and because the second event may run later than our usual closing time, we won’t be able to offer trading or casual place space after the tournaments end.
Players will choose their heroic path: White – Lead, Blue – Outwit, Black – Dominate, Red – Conquer, and Green – Thrive. Each pack includes 2 Born of the Gods booster packs, 3 Theros booster packs, 1 seeded booster pack, 1 promo card, 1 Spindown™ life counter and 1 Hero Card. For this event, players can use the promo card in their prerelease tournament decks. The price will be $25 (plus tax).
Prize support will be in the form of Born of the Gods boosters.
In addition to the main Prerelease Tournament events, if space allows, we will offer Open Dueling, allowing any player who wants to play to purchase 1 Magic Born of the Gods Intro Pack to play against each other, as well as Prerelease tournament players who are between matches.’

Machine of Death – New in the store!
Every now and then, we’ll find a Kickstarter game we want to back. We were among the first stores to carry Dungeon World and Durance because we backed them on Kickstarter. Machine of Death is our newest find, a card game of creative assassination from the minds of webcomic creators David Malki (Wondermark) and Kris Straub (Broodhollow) and game designer David Fooden.
From the Boardgamegeek description:
Machine of Death: The Game of Creative Assassination is a storytelling game set in a world in which a machine can predict how a person will die with 100% accuracy with only a small blood sample. However, the machine delights in being vague and twisted. A card reading “Old Age” could mean you die in your sleep at age 120, or it could mean you’re run over tomorrow by an elderly driver who forgot to take his pills today. Players of the game take the role of assassins, who must use the various tools at their disposal — from storytelling to a slew of items available from specialty Black Market shops — to create a situation in which a target is killed in a way in line with their Death Prediction. The Machine of Death Game uses this basic idea, of assassins working in a world were cause of death is known to create various game modes.
Machine of Death is very similar to Cards Against Humanity or Apples to Apples, and is recommended to fans of those games. There’s also a co-op mode where players are teams of assassins, a “Cutthroat mode” where players assassinate one another and “day off mode,” which isn’t about murder at all but rather draws upon your bevy of assassin skills to accomplish tasks like “opening a stuck jam jar” and “transplanting a tulip bulb.”
In addition to the core game, we have the first two expansions, Webcomics Chums and Webcomics Pals, featuring cards designed by a variety of webcomics creators, including the creators of Dinosaur Comics, Diesel Sweeties, SMBC, Octopus Pie, Chester 5000XYV and lots more.
