NOVA #13

admin May 13th, 2008

nova13.jpgEver wonder what it’d be like to be on a planet Galactus devours? Hey, who hasn’t? Turns out it’s not all over in a matter of seconds - it’s more like the apocalypse that comes with boiling seas, earthquakes, and a day’s worth of awareness that *everyone* is doomed. Or are they? This time, Nova’s out to save as many as he can, but does he dare to go up against Big G himself? The Silver Surfer might have something to say about that. Other picks: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #14 (the showdown with the Big Bad approaches); THE MAN WITH NO NAME #1 (not perfect, but a pretty fun continuation of Ennio Morricon’s legendary Clint Eastwood westerns); WORLD WAR HULK TP (a wild ride, even if the ending doesn’t quite live up to the great midsection); SILENT HILL SINNERS REWARD #3 (gangster-guy in Silent Hill continues to intrigue); and AMERICAN SPLENDOR #2 (oh, Harvey, you awesomely cranky ol’ guy).

NOVA #13

admin May 13th, 2008

nova13.jpgAs I write this, we’re sold out, but we’ve got more coming in, and if you haven’t checked out NOVA yet, this is the issue to check out. It’s a staff favorite, it’s got great writing and art, but more importantly, this is the beginning of a story in which Nova tries to hold off Galactus from eating a planet, which puts him in direct conflict with the Silver Surfer. Oh yeah… it’s on. Also good this week: BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #14 continues the Japanese excursion with Dracula as uneasy ally, GEMINI #1 is a great new superhero book from Jay (DYNAMO 5) Faerber about an office drone who doesn’t *know* he’s a superhero, WILD CARDS #2 is stronger in the second issue than in the generally pretty good first, BATMAN DEATH MASK #2 is kinda like the “Night of the Ninja” episode of the Batman Animated series, DEAD SPACE #3 is creepy sci-fi horror and THE QUESTION VOL 2 POISONED GROUND is more reprints of one of the best ’80s pulp comics a lot of us never read.

D&D 4TH EDITION MIDNIGHT RELEASE - MAKE YOUR FIRST 4TH ED CHARACTER WITH US!

admin May 13th, 2008

It’s just over a month away… the long-awaited release of D&D 4th Edition! Rogues Gallery will be having a midnight release for the D&D 4th Edition on Thursday, June 5th. The event will begin at 9 PM, and we’re inviting anyone who is interested to come out and make their first 4th edition character with us. We’ll have some demo copies of the Player’s Handbook and help in the form of our WOTC volunteer and the store managers, and we’ll help everyone put together their first D&D 4th Edition character. Once enough characters are done to put them into an adventuring party, they’ll run some skirmish combats against 4th edition monsters both familiar and new, and if there’s time and interest, maybe we’ll run a couple adventuring parties up against each other! Sample the game’s characters, races, feats, powers, monsters, combat system and all the rest before you pick up your own shiny new copy at midnight! And don’t forget about our drawing for the special 3D castle GM screen… there’s still time to preorder!

Those who preorder the three core book get entered in the drawing for the special release prize, the 3-D Hand-Painted Castle DM Screen! The screen is cast in 3 pieces so it can adapt easily to any table size or layout, and has shelves and storage space on the DM side to hide miniatures and stat cards from wandering eyes. The gatehouse towers double as dice rollers - one that empties behind the screen for secret rolls, and one that empties into the player’s area for public rolls.

FEATURED BOARD GAMES

Aquaretto
As owners of aquatic zoos, players seek to lure visitors to their water works by introducing the largest assortment of exotic animals to their staple.

The Hanging Gardens
As history courses teach, the hanging gardens were among the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. But, did they actually exist? Nothing remains of their reported splendor, supposedly built for the eyes of Amyitis. Utilizing magnificent buildings, sparkling fountains, and exotic plants, players work to rebuild the legendary gardens to curry favor from The Queen.

Party Pooper
Party Pooper is the spontaneous party game that will have players pointing in all directions. Players are invited to a variety of events — discover who’s the party pooper and who’s the party animal.

FEATURED ROLE-PLAYING GAMES

GameMastery Map Pack: Slums
GameMastery Map Pack: Slums contains 18 full-color, 5 x 8-inch map tiles, stunningly crafted by cartographer Corey Macourek, that combine to form a variety of locations in the slums of a large city. Locations include a Muddy Street, Low Market, Crumbling Building, Wooden Shacks, Filthy Cesspool, Old Church, and a Rat-infested Landfill.

GameMastery Flip-Mat: River Crossing
Flip Mat: River Crossing highlights a wide river winding through a dense forest. The map also features a small trail that crosses the river from a wooden bridge, making a perfect ambush site, while the flip-side details a curving forest river.

GREEN ARROW YEAR ONE HC

admin May 6th, 2008

green.jpgA Dave Farabee Staff Pick

Retelling origin stories can be a tough gig, but every once in a while you get a real winner like GREEN ARROW YEAR ONE. Find out how DC’s master archer learned his trade from the school of hard knocks, marooned on an island with a secret destined to change him forever. Oh yeah, and it’s from the writer/artist team behind Vertigo’s kick-butt action series, THE LOSERS! I also recommend: LOCAL #11 (a neat, philosophical tale of Megan’s uncomfortable meeting with an art student in Toronto); THOR Vol. 1 HC (against tough odds, JMS brought back Thor with a level of epic drama few comics can manage); GON Vol. 4 (another beautiful volume of the idiosyncratic, wordless series about a little dinosaur that’s one part Disney, one part pure Id); USAGI YOJIMBO #111 (been awhile since I looked in on the samurai rabbit, but this is a new storyline and every time I return to the series it’s like visiting an old friend); GAMOURPUSS #1 (Dave Sim’s follow-up to CEREBUS is a bizarre, meandering, entertaining meeting of comic art history and the fashion industry) and GREEN LANTERN #30 (Geoff Johns continues his expanded origin for Hal Jordan, factoring in elements from one of Alan Moore’s rare Green Lantern stories in the 80s). A good, weird week!

A fantastic action story with a re-telling of Green Arrow’s origin, courtesy of LOSERS creative team Andy Diggle and Jock. Other good stuff this week included BPRD VOL 8 KILLING GROUND TP, IMMORTAL IRON FIST #14 (finishing up the big kung-fu tournament story), NOBLE CAUSES #33 (Dynamo 5 fans should check this out) and SPEED RACER RACER X ORIGINS TP (great origin stories of Speed Racer and Racer X with terrific artwork including work by BUFFY cover artist Jo Chen).

D&D 4TH EDITION MIDNIGHT RELEASE - JUNE 5TH!

admin May 6th, 2008

It’s just over a month away… the long-awaited release of D&D 4th Edition! Rogues Gallery will be having a midnight release for the D&D 4th Edition on Thursday, June 5th.

There’s still time to get a preorder in for the three core books and get entered in the drawing for the special release prize, the 3-D Hand-Painted Castle DM Screen!

We only have one of these prizes, and to get it all you need to do is sign up to preorder the three D&D 4th Edition books (or the slipcased set of all three) to buy at the midnight release or the day after, and one lucky winner will get this cool item along with their D&D 4th Edition books (and the jealousy of at least three members of the staff). Ask at the counter to preorder the books and we’ll put you on the list!
