Round Up For Charity!

Rogues Gallery Comics & Games is offering a new charitable donation system for our customers. If you’d like, you can “round up” your purchase to the nearest dollar amount, and at the end of the month, we’ll collect all the rounded-up amounts and send a check to that month’s charity.

We’ll also be matching the first $100 of donations each month. For August, y’all helped us raise $122 for the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund!

This can be done with cash or card, and it’s as easy as asking the person ringing you up to round up your transaction. Our charity of the month for September is Rebuild Texas Fund, a fund created by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation to rebuild and support Houston in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. We’ve already donated $100 to take advantage of Dell’s donation matching, but we’ll also match the donations at the end of the month!

Boardgame Nights on Tuesdays!

In response to popular demand, we’re starting up a regular boardgame and cardgame night on Tuesdays! The tables are always open, of course, but for this specific night we figure people should start showing up around 6 PM, and we’ll be open until 9 PM so y’all can play games!

Bring your own, or feel free to sample our well-stocked game library!

Game Space: Rules & Reservations

We have two standing game tables available for free play, as long as they aren’t reserved for other use.

Standard reserved times include Monday night from 6 PM – 9 PM (Heroclix), Thursday night from 6 PM – 9 PM (D&D Adventurers League), Friday night from 6 PM – 10 PM (Magic The Gathering) and one Saturday a month from 6 PM – 9 PM (Gaming with Rogues).

Game Table Reservations:

The tables are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. However, you can also reserve the tables for a 3 hour window, and we can have a standing reservation if someone wants to run a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly game.

Standard slots are 11 AM – 1 PM, 1 PM – 4 PM, and 4 PM – 7 PM. If you’re running a longer game, you can sign up for two consecutive slots, and any of these can extend another 2 hours, provided there isn’t someone signed up to use the table after that.

If you have a Rogue membership, you can reserve up to three slots free per week. Also, any time you purchase a game from us, you can ask to have a slot reserved to play that game (or any other game you have) anytime in the next two weeks (14 days).

We will also provide free game space for anyone wishing to demo or playtest their game for our players, provided the demo is open to all customers.

Otherwise, we will ask for $10 to reserve a table for a 2-6 hour slot.

We ask that those with a reserved game slot arrive within 15 minutes of the start time, or we reserve the right to offer the space to someone else.

Organized Play:

We support organized play for Heroclix, Dungeons & Dragons and Magic the Gathering at present, plus boardgames under the Asmoplay program.

We are happy to support more organized play if there is an interest, and can order organized play kits if you have a group that is interested in purchasing them for use at the store. If we can get a big enough group for organized play, Rogues Gallery will provide organized play kits and prizes, although we will at that point ask that anyone be allowed to play in tournaments.

In-Store Gaming Rules:

1. We’re a family store – please keep cursing/swearing to a minimum – even if a red dragon just ate your favorite character.

2. Keep other shoppers in mind when you’re playing – We want you to enjoy yourself, but make sure and keep shopping aisles clear and keep the noise level reasonable.

3. Food is allowed (within reason), we just ask you to be careful not to spill on the product, tables, other gamers, etc.

4.We expect everyone to be a courteous winner and a gracious loser, especially if you’re playing with strangers. A little friendly banter is fine, but smack talk and whining will not be tolerated.

5. Showing up a little early is encouraged. It’s important that our staff is able to close up on time and get home, so we try not to run gaming late if possible.

6. Clean up after yourself. Trash cans are in the bathroom and up at the counter.

Staffers’ and DMs’ decisions are final.  If you have an issue, feel free to email or call the management, but arguing with the staff or DM at the time is not acceptable.

Breaking these rules can result in a warning, a temporary suspension of table privileges, or a ban on future use of game tables, at the discretion of management.

P.S. We’d like to ask that folks not use the tables for sitting and reading, to keep them available for use in playing board, card, and role-playing games.

Gaming with Rogues – Unearth and Boss Monster

On the third Saturday of every month, Rogues Gallery will host a casual gaming night – each month will focus on a different game. The game night will begin at 6:30 PM and run until 9:00 PM, when the store closes.
This month’s game is on October 21st, and we’ll be playing Brotherwise Games’ new game Unearth and their older game Boss Monster!

Unearth is a bend-your-luck game of dice placement and set collection. Designed by Jason Harner and Matthew Ransom, it plays in under an hour with 2-4 players. Each player leads a tribe of Delvers, represented by five dice (3 six-sided, 1 four-sided, and 1 eight-sided). Players take turns rolling and placing dice in an attempt to claim Ruins.

The game’s elegant core mechanic is accessible to players of all skill levels. High rolls help players claim Ruins, while low rolls help players collect Stones. This opens two paths to victory: claiming sets of Ruins or using Stones to build Wonders. Delver cards help you affect your dice rolls or dice in play, and Wonders can grant abilities that impact the late game.

Inspired by a love of classic video games, Boss Monster: The Dungeon Building Card Game pits 2-4 players in a competition to build the ultimate side-scrolling dungeon. Players compete to lure and destroy hapless adventurers, racing to outbid one another to see who can build the most enticing, treasure-filled dungeon. The goal of Boss Monster is to be the first Boss to amass ten Souls, which are gained when a Hero is lured and defeated — but a player can lose if his Boss takes five Wounds from Heroes who survive his dungeon.

Playing Boss Monster requires you to juggle two competing priorities: the need to lure Heroes at a faster rate than your opponents, and the need to kill those Heroes before they reach your Boss. Players can build one room per turn, each with its own damage and treasure value. More attractive rooms tend to deal less damage, so a Boss who is too greedy can become inundated with deadly Heroes.

Players interact with each other by building rooms and playing Spells. Because different Heroes seek different treasure types, and rooms are built simultaneously (played face down, then revealed), this means that every “build phase” is a bidding war. Spells are instant-speed effects that can give players advantages or disrupt opponents.

So whether you’ve played before or just want to try it out, come join us for Gaming with Rogues! And don’t forget that with your Rogue Card, you can get 10% off on Unearth and Boss Monster from now until the end of August!

Also, Gaming with Rogues is an open game night, so folks are welcome to play any game in our well-stocked boardgame and card game library or bring a favorite game of their own!

Come on out and give the game a try, we’re happy to teach it if you haven’t played before, or if you want to get some practice, come out and play on our Tuesday night open boardgame nights!

The game should run until about 4 PM, depending on turnout and how long the rounds take.

Magic the Gathering Ixalan Prerelease and Draft Weekend!

FIRST ROUND BEGINS AT NOON – SECOND ROUND BEGINS AT 4:00 – PRE-REGISTRATION STRONGLY RECOMMENDED

For centuries, the untamed jungles of Ixalan have hidden a coveted secret: Orazca, the city of gold. But no secret can remain undiscovered, and no treasure can be taken uncontested. Unfurl your sails, saddle up a dinosaur, and battle your rivals as you embark on a journey to claim the plane’s greatest fortune for yourself!

Rogues Gallery will be holding two prerelease events for Magic: The Gathering’s new set, Ixalan, on Sunday, April 23rd! We recommend that you call or email ahead to preregister, because we have limited space and tend to fill up well before the day of the event itself. We have room for 18 players in the first event, beginning at noon, and 18 players in the second event, beginning at 4:00 PM. If space allows, we are happy to allow players to play in both prerelease tournaments… players will have to buy-in to both tournaments, you cannot carry over cards or decks from the first prerelease into the second. In addition, of late we’ve had folks sign up and not show up, so if you don’t get in on your preferred time, you are welcome to sign up as an alternate or to come in on the day and try to get available spaces.

Registration will begin at noon on September 24th. We’ll begin the first event at 12:30 with 30 minutes to construct your decks, and the pre-release will run 3 rounds from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM or so. Please note that if you are preregistered, you must arrive by 12:15 to claim your spot or it will be opened up for walk-ins.

The second tournament will begin registration at 4:00, and the tournament will start as close to 4 PM as we can manage, with 30 minutes to construct your decks. Please note for those preregistered, you must arrive by 4:00 to claim your spot or it will be opened up for walk-ins.

Prerelease packs will be $25.99 plus tax. You must buy a pack for each tournament you enter.

We will allow walk-ins for both tournaments if the space is not filled, but we encourage preregistration, as we generally fill up fairly quickly. In addition, because there are two events, and because the second event may run later than our usual closing time, we won’t be able to offer trading or casual place space after the tournaments end.

Prize support will be in the form of Ixalan boosters. We award boosters for each round you win. The remainder are divided up into first, second and third prizes.

In addition to the main prerelease tournament events, if space allows, we will offer open dueling, allowing any player who wants to play to purchase Ixalan Planeswalker Decks to play against each other, as well as prerelease tournament players who are between matches.

We’ll also, by popular demand, be running a draft event for draft weekend on Saturday, September 30th!

Players will each buy 3 booster packs. Players open one booster pack and choose one card from the pack and then pass the remaining cards to player on their left. They will continue until all cards have been chosen from the first booster pack. Repeat this process for the next two boosters, switching the direction in which the boosters are passed around the table.

Each player will construct a deck with a minimum size of 40 cards. We’ll provide a land station so folks can borrow land for their decks if they would like.

Participants will receive a free, limited edition draft weekend promo card!

We’ll run a draft starting at 2 PM – 5 PM, and if there’s interest after that round we’ll run another round for 5 PM – 8 PM. You can sign up ahead of time by dropping us an email, or just drop in on the day!

Ladies Night Book Club!

LADIES! Do you like comics? Do you like games? Do you just enjoy getting your geek on? Are you looking to make some awesome new friends? Then join us for LADIES NIGHT, hosted by our lady staff!

This month, we’re doing a book club on Saturday, September 30th from 8 PM – 11 PM! Teala has chosen THE WICKED + THE DIVINE VOL 1 as our first graphic novel. Here’s the synopsis she stole from Goodreads:

“Every ninety years, twelve gods incarnate as humans. They are loved. They are hated. In two years, they are dead. The team behind critical tongue-attractors like Young Avengers and PHONOGRAM reunite to create a world where gods are the ultimate pop stars and pop stars are the ultimate gods. But remember: just because you’re immortal, doesn’t mean you’re going to live forever.”

It’s a pretty Rated R book, so this event will be 17+.

We would also like to add that we do not discriminate here at Rogues Gallery. If you identify as female/femme you are most welcome.

As always, pretty please RSVP on the Facebook event, just so I can get a rough headcount.

Hope to see you there! 🙂

Harley Quinn Day is Saturday, September 23!

The fan-favorite event celebrating The Dark Knight, “Batman Day” is back… with a twist!

This year, since it’s her 25th birthday, Harley Quinn is taking over the day!

Batman Day is an annual event celebrating all things Batman from comics to video games and more. This year, the celebration puts Harley Quinn front and center. We’ll have Catwoman on hand, as well as a Harley Quinn or two.

We’ll have free Batman and Harley Quinn masks (one per person, while supplies last) for the first 100 or so people in the door! The Batman masks are in the style of Jim Lee, John Romita Jr., and Andy Kubert, while the Harley Quinn is in the style of Yancy LaBat.

We’ll also have a 15% off on all Batman and Harley Quinn graphic novels and merchandise that day! We’ll have cosplayers on hand for kids to take pictures with, and we’ll have a demo of the Batman Animated Series dice game at 1 PM!

Instead of a single comic, there will be three free offerings this year:

BATMAN DAY 2017 SPECIAL EDITION #1 reprints BATMAN #16, the first chapter of “I Am Bane,” written by Tom King with art by David Finch. This issue’s cover art is by Ryan Sook and features Batman and Harley Quinn in an homage to THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS #1.

This issue also includes a new, three-page original story written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti with art by Bret Blevins!

HARLEY QUINN BATMAN DAY 2017 SPECIAL EDITION #1 reprints HARLEY QUINN #11, the first chapter of “Joker Loves Harley,” written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti with art by John Timms and a cover by Amanda Conner.

DC SUPER HERO GIRLS BATMAN DAY 2017 SPECIAL EDITION #1 features a chapter of the upcoming all-ages original graphic novel DC SUPER HERO GIRLS: OUT OF THE BOTTLE, starring Harley Quinn and written by Shea Fontana with art by Marcelo DiChiara and Agnes Garbowska and a cover by Yancey Labat.

Gaming with Rogues – Tokaido

On the third Saturday of every month, Rogues Gallery will host a casual gaming night – each month will focus on a different game. The game night will begin at 6:30 PM and run until 9:00 PM, when the store closes.
This month’s game is on September 16th, and we’ll be playing Tokaido!

In Tokaido, each player is a traveler crossing the “East sea road”, one of the most magnificent roads of Japan. While traveling, you will meet people, taste fine meals, collect beautiful items, discover great panoramas, and visit temples and wild places but at the end of the day, when everyone has arrived at the end of the road you’ll have to be the most initiated traveler – which means that you’ll have to be the one who discovered the most interesting and varied things.

Through a unique zen mood, Tokaido is a strategic game while being extraordinarily peaceful and easy to learn.

So whether you’ve played Tokaido before or just want to try it out, come join us for Gaming with Rogues! And don’t forget that with your Rogue Card, you can get 10% off on Tokaido from now until the end of August!

Also, Gaming with Rogues is an open game night, so folks are welcome to play any game in our well-stocked boardgame and card game library or bring a favorite game of their own!
